NH Independents told to stay home?
Something funny does seem to be going on in NH:
TheWMURChannel.com - News - Unaffiliated Voters Receive False Phone Calls
Attorney General Peter Heed said someone has been calling voters who are unaffiliated with a party and telling them that they can't vote in the primary -- which is untrue.
Heed said his office has received complaints from town and city clerks as well as undeclared voters who said they are being told they cannot vote.
A voter who is registered to vote in New Hampshire but has not declared a party affiliation may vote in the presidential primary and choose the ballot of either party at the polling place...
Heed urged anyone who receives such a call to contact his office at (866)-VOTER03.
This would seem to contradict the
initial reports of callers supposedly telling Independents they can't vote but then telling them they
could if the citizen expressed support for Dean.
Let's think about this for a moment -
who would benefit if Independents stayed home? I would argue (as an Independent) that Dean and perhaps Clark would be worst off if Independent turnout were depressed - they both do very well with people outside the Democratic Party.
No, I only see this benefiting the Washington candidates who have loyal followings in the party and less appeal outside it.
So -- why would the Dean people be the ones doing this? I am dubious.
