Santorum's Perspective
The CIA and the U.S. military can go pound sand; Senator Rick Santorum is the nation's true defender!:
Yahoo! News - Senate Scuttles Gay Marriage Amendment
"I would argue that the future of our country hangs in the balance because the future of marriage hangs in the balance," he said shortly before the vote. "Isn't that the ultimate homeland security, standing up and defending marriage?"
Pack up your guns and your listening devices, people. As long as we keep the gays from mating for life, this country is
secure.
Thankfully, the Hate Amendment didn't even make it out of debate: cloture failed to win even the symbolic victory of a simple majority (it was 48-50, nowhere close to the 60 votes needed to end debate). As the
Village Voice put it, "Sense visited Congress today."

I'm not a big fan of gay marriage. Like Kerry, Edwards, Dean et al, I favor civil unions that are comparable. That said, though... it seems to me that if Santorum were serious about "defending marriage" he'd be leading the charge to shut down the walk-in marriage chapel industry that gave us the likes of Brittney Spears farce of a marriage. It makes ZERO sense that gays getting married is in any way a greater threat to the institution than the very high profile antics of a self-centered bimbo did.
Seems to me that given his stance in light of the above... that Santorum is himself a serious threat to the institution of marriage.
